I realize that just about everybody has their own "key" to making moving easy.  Some people swear by professional movers, and if you can afford it I can understand why.  Other folks take a pure DIY attitude and opt for a rental truck.  Still others like moving pods.  In my opinion, the way to make a move truly efficient is to combine a pod with a rental truck, gaining the benefits of both methods.

The main reason for this comes down to the human element.  While there are those who hire professionals and those who find a day laborer outside a hardware store, most of us get our friends to help us move.  We also do our best to avoid the friends of ours that we know are about to move.  Why?  Helping a friend move is a colossal waste of time.

Now, if it were only helping out with the few truly unmanageable items in a friend's house, nobody would mind.  Friends do help friends, and if you asked a buddy to help you with the solid wood chest of drawers your grandfather made you or the king-sized sleigh bed that weighs two hundred pounds he'd probably help out if that was all there was to it.

Moving all the heavy furniture out of an average house is a quick job for a few guys, and most people's friends would be more than happy to help out with a move if that was all that was involved.  Nobody minds moving a friend's heavy stuff with him.  What we mind is standing around for hours while our good buddy sorts through all his other stuff.  Or having to pack up his underwear for him.  That strains the definition of friendship.

So why use your friends for anything but the heavy stuff?  This is where the rental truck comes in.  One morning, you get the truck and a few friends.  You lift all the heavy stuff in, go straight to the new place, and unload all the heavy stuff.  It won't take more than three or four hours, and most of your friends will quickly realize that they're going to get obligatory moving-day beer without having to do that much work.

The problem with using a rental truck for the whole move is that you have to keep it around while you sort through everything, and you can't really do an efficient haul of heavy stuff.  So for everything except the items you need help with, use a moving pod.  The pod rental company will drop it off in front of your house before your move.  You can fill it at your leisure.  Then they'll pick it up and transport it to your new place.

Sometimes it can take a long time to go through everything you own, and there's a lot to be said for being able to move boxes out of your house as soon as you've gotten them packed up instead of stacking them in a corner, creating more clutter in the midst of the mess you're already making by moving.

For many people the convenience and price point of moving pods make a compelling reason to use them for everything.  But the advantage of using a rental truck for heavy items is that you're in the driver's seat.  Not only can you get the stuff loaded quickly, but you can drive it over and get it unloaded as well.
